Context

Academic Project | Fall 2022

Timeframe

14 weeks

Tools

Figma, Adobe Illustrator, Google slides

Role

Research, Insights generation, concept development, Low and High-fidelity wireframes, Clickable prototype

Objective

How might we use Digital Twin to improve airport operations?

Opportunity

A cost-effective analytical system to understand how and where the food is being wasted using digital twin technology. The scalable model can be easily adapted to streamline other operational processes.

The dashboard collects live data from passenger surveys about their food preferences and satisfaction, live inventory information, and unconsumed meal data from flight attendants and shows insights, analysis, and forecast for a most preferred meal, unconsumed item, etc to help take actionable steps for United.

Digital twin

Digital Twin technology uses live data and generates insights and predictive analysis for the viewers. It has been increasingly used in a wide range of contexts, from cities to manufacturing plants, to help increase efficiency, reduce cost, manage disasters, and improve ROI.

Though the aviation industry is lagging in the adoption of this technology, massive opportunities exist within the airline industry.

Subject Matter Interviews

We spoke with Technology Experts who were versed in IoT, Digital Twins, and AR/VR technologies. We also interviewed professionals in the airline industry and visited the food catering facility of United.

Primary Research

At IIT’s technology and computing lab, we tested AR/VR technologies, exploring how they could be used with Digital Twins in exploring solutions.
